Is there a psychological reason why men with thinning hair grow beards?

maybe a old caveman trait to address noticeable differences and better attract a mate ?

making up for the loss on top of the head by growing them under his chin/?

    Sounds probable.
    Facial hair does distract one from realizing that another is balding, but not that significantly.
