Normally, male-pattern baldness is hereditary, from the mother's side. Are you sure no one on her side (Grandfather, Great-Grandfather,etc.) had receding/thinning hair? Of course, sometimes it just has to do with age or stress or other factors. I don't think wearing a ponytail should make you lose your hair, though. If you wear it too tight (try a looser ponytail with a soft pony band) or don't care for it properly, it could probably break off some, but it shouldn't cause it to actually fall out, I wouldn't think. But to be safe, maybe you could trim it and wear it down at home,or whatever, so it isn't pulled back all he time. And use rich shampoos/conditioners like Pantene Pro-V or even Rogaine if you really think you need it. Whether or not you want to cut it all off is up to you, though, but I don't think you should have to.
References :
maybe, but you might want to make sure your pomytail is looser for good measures....but some men DO suffer from hair loss through age, even if there is no record in their family.
References :
No. It causes hair breakage because of the things used to hold the pony tail. Rubber bands are the worst culprit. Any bands with any metal on them are next. These things gradually cut into the hair making it weak and it breaks off mid shaft. Hair loss at the root (scalp) is a whole different ballgame and a pony tail does not cause this. Again, the short answer is "No".
References :
If you're pulling it too tight then yes. The stress from your pony could be causing hair loss. Maybe you should try scalp massages or something..to get circulation going in the scalp, thus resulting in hair growth!

Of course..you have to be consistent with it..
